In short

Finch wraps self-care in caring for a virtual pet, which works extremely well for people who need warmth and low stakes and struggle to do things for themselves. Orbit is not gentle in that way; it runs a fixed routine step by step and protects your progress on missed days. Different mechanisms, different problems, and they coexist happily.

Key facts

- Finch is made by Finch Care Public Benefit Corporation and runs on iPhone and iPad, requiring iOS 15.6 or later.
- Orbit is iPhone-only and requires iOS 26 or later.
- Finch's mechanic is caring for a virtual bird that grows when you look after yourself; Orbit has no character and no reward economy.
- Both are free to download with a paid subscription.
- Finch is one of the most highly rated self-care apps on the App Store, with hundreds of thousands of ratings.

## Two very different bets

Finch bets on indirection. Doing things for yourself is hard; doing things for someone who depends on you is easier. So the app gives you a bird, and the bird grows when you look after yourself. That is a real psychological mechanism and Finch executes it about as well as it can be executed — it is one of the highest-rated apps of its kind on the App Store.

Orbit bets on structure. It assumes you already want to do the routine and that the failure happens between steps, so it holds the sequence and shows you the current step wherever you are looking. There is no character, no coins and nothing to collect.

Whether Finch or Orbit is right for you is mostly a question of which failure you are having.

## Where Finch is genuinely better

Warmth. Finch is kind in a way that most productivity software is not, and for people who are hard on themselves that is not decoration — it is the working mechanism.

Breadth of self-care. Mood tracking, reflection prompts, breathing exercises, journaling. Orbit does none of this and does not intend to.

Low stakes. Nothing in Finch shouts at you. Progress accumulates gently.

Track record and community. A very large, very positive user base, and a company structured as a public benefit corporation.

## Where Orbit is genuinely better

Getting through a sequence. Finch will remind you about a habit. Orbit runs the routine with you, in order, with the current step visible on the Lock Screen.

No economy to maintain. For some people the pet is motivating; for others it becomes another thing to keep alive, and the guilt arrives from a new direction. Orbit has nothing to feed.

Missed days are free. Freezes are spent automatically.

Privacy. No account, data on the device, optional sync through your own iCloud.

## How to choose

If what stops you is that self-care feels undeserved or pointless, Finch is addressing that directly and Orbit is not.

If what stops you is that the morning has nine steps and you reliably fall out of it at step three, Orbit is addressing that directly and Finch is not.

They are not competitors in any real sense, and using both is a common and sensible arrangement.

Orbit is a routine app, not a medical device, a diagnosis or a treatment. Nothing here is medical advice. If ADHD symptoms are affecting your daily life, talk to a qualified clinician.

## Frequently asked

**Is there an alternative to Finch without the pet?**

Orbit is one: no character, no reward economy, no collecting. It runs routines and protects your streak on missed days. If the pet is what makes Finch work for you, though, replacing it with something plainer is likely to be a downgrade rather than a fix.

**Is Finch good for ADHD?**

Many people with ADHD find it works because it lowers the stakes and makes self-care feel like care for someone else rather than a performance target. It is less strong as a way to get through a fixed sequence at 7am, which is a different job.

**Can I use Finch and Orbit together?**

Yes. They overlap very little: Finch handles mood, reflection and gentle self-care prompts; Orbit handles the mechanical business of getting through a morning or a wind-down.

## Orbit builds these routines for you

Orbit is an ADHD routine builder for iPhone: templates instead of blank screens, an ambient orb that runs each step with you, and streak freezes so a missed day doesn't undo a month.
