Two very different bets
Finch bets on indirection. Doing things for yourself is hard; doing things for someone who depends on you is easier. So the app gives you a bird, and the bird grows when you look after yourself. That is a real psychological mechanism and Finch executes it about as well as it can be executed — it is one of the highest-rated apps of its kind on the App Store.
Orbit bets on structure. It assumes you already want to do the routine and that the failure happens between steps, so it holds the sequence and shows you the current step wherever you are looking. There is no character, no coins and nothing to collect.
Whether Finch or Orbit is right for you is mostly a question of which failure you are having.

Where Finch is genuinely better
Warmth. Finch is kind in a way that most productivity software is not, and for people who are hard on themselves that is not decoration — it is the working mechanism.
Breadth of self-care. Mood tracking, reflection prompts, breathing exercises, journaling. Orbit does none of this and does not intend to.
Low stakes. Nothing in Finch shouts at you. Progress accumulates gently.
Track record and community. A very large, very positive user base, and a company structured as a public benefit corporation.
Where Orbit is genuinely better
Getting through a sequence. Finch will remind you about a habit. Orbit runs the routine with you, in order, with the current step visible on the Lock Screen.
No economy to maintain. For some people the pet is motivating; for others it becomes another thing to keep alive, and the guilt arrives from a new direction. Orbit has nothing to feed.
Missed days are free. Freezes are spent automatically.
Privacy. No account, data on the device, optional sync through your own iCloud.
How to choose
If what stops you is that self-care feels undeserved or pointless, Finch is addressing that directly and Orbit is not.
If what stops you is that the morning has nine steps and you reliably fall out of it at step three, Orbit is addressing that directly and Finch is not.
They are not competitors in any real sense, and using both is a common and sensible arrangement.
