The best Habitica alternatives, with and without the game

By · Published 10 September 2026 · 4-minute read

Keep the game, or drop it?

Habitica turns your task list into a role-playing game: gold and experience for what you complete, gear and pets to collect, parties and quests with friends — and lost health when you miss a Daily. For many people it is the first productivity tool that ever felt like fun.

The question to answer before switching is which part stopped working:

Both groups are below. Orbit is in the second one, because we make it.

Gamified alternatives

1. Forest — focus that grows a forest

Stay off your phone and a tree grows; leave early and it withers. Over time the trees become a forest, with species and soundscapes to unlock, shared sessions with friends, and real trees planted through a partnership with Trees for the Future. It can also block distracting apps during a session.

2. Numo — gamified, and built for ADHD

Numo combines a gamified, social to-do list — earn karma for tasks, level up, see what others in your "squad" completed — with short, meme-friendly lessons on ADHD topics like procrastination and time management, and daily tips from the ADHD community.

3. Finch — rewards without combat

Finch keeps the reward loop but swaps battles for looking after a small bird: self-care check-ins, goals and reflections earn your pet adventures. There is no damage.

Calm alternatives

4. Streaks — one purchase, no subscription

An Apple Design Award winner that tracks up to 24 daily tasks, syncs through iCloud, reads completions from the Health app, and has one of the best Apple Watch apps in the category. It is a paid app with a one-time price.

5. Habitify — tracking that can pause

Habitify is a clean habit tracker with streaks, charts, challenges, automatic logging from Apple Health and other apps, and — importantly — the option to mark a habit as done, skipped or missed and to pause it when life changes. It runs across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Android.

6. (Not Boring) Habits — no streaks, no guilt

Built on the idea that a habit needs around 60 repetitions, not an unbroken run. There are no streaks, and the app is explicit that missing a day does not produce guilt.

7. Orbit — a routine run for you, not a score

Orbit is not a habit tracker. You build a routine as a list of steps and it walks you through them one at a time, on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. There is no score, no gold and no health. Streaks earn freezes — one for every five days in a row — and a missed day can be rescued when you come back.

How to choose

  1. You still love games: Forest for focus, Numo for tasks, Finch for self-care.
  2. You want a tracker that respects bad days: Habitify or (Not Boring) Habits.
  3. You want to pay once: Streaks.
  4. You need the routine itself to happen: Orbit.

If gamification has burnt you before, the pattern is worth understanding rather than just switching apps: why streaks break ADHD brains and dopamine and ADHD motivation explain why rewards help most in the first weeks and least when you need them.

Frequently asked

What is similar to Habitica?

For gamification, Forest (focus sessions grow a virtual forest), Numo (a gamified ADHD to-do list with karma points and a community) and Finch (self-care by caring for a pet). For a simpler habit tracker, Streaks or Habitify.

What is a less punishing alternative to Habitica?

(Not Boring) Habits has no streaks and no guilt for missed days. Habitify lets you mark a day as skipped and pause habits. Orbit earns you streak freezes that can rescue a streak when you come back after missing days.

Is there a gamified habit app for ADHD?

Numo is built specifically for ADHD: a gamified to-do list with karma points, levels, short lessons and a community of people with ADHD. Habitica itself is also widely used by people with ADHD.
