The app you forgot to open
Every app has an unstated requirement: that you remember it exists at the moment it would help. For most software that is a trivial assumption. For an ADHD tool it is the whole problem restated as a feature request.
Remembering to do something in the future is prospective memory, and it is one of the functions ADHD affects most visibly. So an app whose entire value lives behind its own icon has, by design, made itself dependent on the thing it was bought to compensate for.
Widgets and Live Activities are the way out of that loop. They do not require memory. They require a glance you were already going to make.
Three different mechanisms
They are often lumped together, and they do different jobs.

The distinction matters because notifications degrade. Send enough of them and they get swiped away without being read — and once that habit forms, the important one goes with the rest. Widgets and Live Activities do not degrade the same way, because they never demand anything.
Recovery cost, not reminder count
The useful measure for an ADHD app is not how many reminders it can send. It is recovery cost: once you have been distracted mid-routine, how long does it take to get back on track?
Without external presence, the sequence is: notice you have drifted, remember what you were doing, remember which app was holding it, unlock the phone, find the app, find your place. Each of those steps can fail on its own, and the usual outcome is that the routine is simply over.
With a Live Activity, the sequence is: pick up the phone, see step 4 of 7 on the Lock Screen.
That difference — twenty minutes lost versus five seconds — is why this matters more than most feature comparisons. It is also invisible on a feature list, which is why so many people only discover it after the app has already failed them.
What to check before installing
- Does it have a Lock Screen presence at all? Look at the App Store screenshots. If every screenshot is inside the app, the answer is usually no.
- Does the widget show state, or just a launcher? A button that opens the app is not the same as a panel showing where you are.
- Does the Live Activity update as things progress, or does it appear once and go stale?
- Can you act from it? Marking a step done without unlocking and navigating is a real reduction in friction.
- Does it work on your device? Live Activities need iOS 16 or later on iPhone. The Dynamic Island is a Pro-model feature; the Lock Screen presentation works on any supported iPhone. There is no iPad equivalent.
The limits
External presence does not make you do the thing. It removes one specific failure — losing the thread — and leaves the others intact. If the routine itself is too long, or the first step is too big, no widget will rescue it.
There is also a saturation point. Six widgets competing for attention is a cluttered Lock Screen, and clutter is its own distraction. One live thing at a time is the useful configuration.
How Orbit uses them
When a routine starts, Orbit puts a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island showing the current step and where you are in the sequence. You can move to the next step from there. When nothing is running, the widget shows what is due next.
The design assumption is simple: the phone screen is where attention keeps returning, so that is where the routine should live — not behind an icon you have to think of first.
